About The Event
Nagasaki 8.9 Peace Exhibition 2024 Lela International has been commemorating the dropping of the atomic bomb on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, Japan, for the past 44 years with an art exhibition at the Nagasaki Prefectural Museum of Art. This year will be the 45th anniversary that LELA will be inviting artists to contribute to the event with artwork advocating for peace, denouncing war, cruelty, and the d use of atomic weapons.
The title of this annual exhibit includes “8.9” on August 9th, which refers to the date the bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. It was especially significant to the founder of the LELA Art group, Mr. Hideo Sakata, who, as a 10-year-old native of Nagasaki at the time, survived this horrific event. However, members of his family did not. Sakata san started the peace exhibitions as an adult as part of his advocacy for peace and against war, especially the use of atomic weapons.
Sadly, Mr. Hideo Sakata passed away in 2023. Still, his legacy lives on through LELA International Artists with a commitment to his impactful advocacy against war, especially the use of atomic weapons. We do this by continuing with a robust art exhibition for peace every year at the Prefecture Museum of Art in Nagasaki, Japan, on 8/9, the date the atomic bomb fell on Nagasaki. International art exhibit and cultural event. He was building Bridges through Art!
